Why don't you try helping him yourself? Don't just offer advice! Go, help him! You could do it in an indirect way, something like leaving a sum of money under his rug, helping him with his studies or just offering to babysit. I would do that, if I were you. Those are just examples, but I am sure you can come up with some other ideas.
